New Zealand Pet Arrival Airports: Auckland or Christchurch

A cat or dog from Malaysia can only enter New Zealand through Auckland or Christchurch. Wellington, Queenstown and Dunedin are closed to pet arrivals. The choice follows the quarantine map — two MPI-approved facilities serve Auckland, one serves Christchurch. Book the facility first, then build the flight around the airport it sits behind.

Introduction: two doors into the country

Quick answer

New Zealand runs a two-door border for pets. Auckland and Christchurch are the only airports where a cat or dog arriving from Malaysia can be inspected and passed to a quarantine facility. That single fact shapes the flight, the facility booking and the drive home.

Families who call My Pet Mover about New Zealand usually have the human side settled first. The job is in Wellington. The house is in Nelson. The flights are booked. Then someone asks where the dog lands, and the plan has to be rebuilt around an airport nobody had considered.

Pets do not follow their owners through the border. They travel as manifested cargo on a route the airline accepts, they land where MPI can meet them, and they leave the airport in a quarantine operator’s van. Along the Malaysia to New Zealand corridor, the arrival airport is not a preference. It is the first fixed point in the schedule.

The video below shows what an airport animal facility actually looks like — the kind of room your pet passes through before anyone drives it anywhere.

Which New Zealand airports can a pet arrive at?

Quick answer

Auckland and Christchurch, and nowhere else. MPI’s guidance is explicit that cats and dogs are either cleared at the border (Australian animals only) or transferred to a quarantine facility, and both actions happen at Auckland or Christchurch. Malaysian pets always take the second path.

Because Malaysia sits in New Zealand’s Category 3 group rather than the Australian carve-out, a Malaysian cat or dog is never cleared at the airport. It is directed to quarantine. If you have not yet checked where Malaysia stands, start with whether Malaysia is approved to send pets to New Zealand, because the category decides the whole shape of the arrival.

What that rules out is worth stating plainly:

  • Wellington. International flights land there, but no MPI-approved cat and dog quarantine facility sits behind it.
  • Queenstown and Dunedin. Popular destinations for relocating families, closed to pet arrivals.
  • Any airport chosen for convenience. The airline may sell the sector; MPI still will not accept the animal there.

Why the list stops at two airports

Quick answer

The airport list is a consequence of the quarantine map, not a separate rule. Every arriving pet must reach an MPI-approved transitional facility quickly, and be inspected by an MPI veterinarian within 72 hours. Only Auckland and Christchurch have facilities close enough to make that work.

Most guides present the two airports as an arbitrary restriction. Read MPI’s own material and the logic runs the other way. The facilities came first; the airport list describes where those facilities are.

Three requirements sit behind it:

  1. A facility must be reachable the same day. The animal moves from the cargo terminal to quarantine in one road trip, in the operator’s own vehicle.
  2. An MPI veterinarian must inspect within 72 hours of arrival at the facility, so an inspector has to be within working distance.
  3. Border inspection staff must be rostered to meet the aircraft and decide clearance or direction to quarantine.

Add a fourth airport and MPI would need a fourth approved facility, a fourth inspection roster, and a fourth set of veterinary cover. The volume of pet arrivals into New Zealand does not justify it.

Auckland and Christchurch side by side

Quick answer

Auckland carries two of the three MPI-approved quarantine facilities and the only nonstop link from Kuala Lumpur. Christchurch has one facility and no nonstop from Malaysia, but it puts a South Island pet where it needs to be without a second flight.

How a Malaysian pet reaches each airport

Quick answer

Auckland is reachable nonstop from Kuala Lumpur. Christchurch is not, and is normally reached through Singapore, which Christchurch Airport serves with a year-round nonstop link. Every routing decision then has to clear one more test: whether the carrier accepts live animals on that sector on that date.

A sector existing on a timetable is not the same as a sector your pet can fly. Live animal acceptance depends on the aircraft operating that day, the carrier’s seasonal embargoes and the crate’s dimensions. That check happens before anything is confirmed, which is also why the cargo process at KLIA on flight day is booked around the aircraft rather than the family’s own itinerary.

Two things change when a routing adds a stop. The pet spends longer in the crate, and a second country’s rules apply for the hours it sits on the ground. Our guide to transit rules and layover permits covers what a stop can quietly require.

Singapore is the usual example. The rules described in our piece on Singapore pet quarantine for Malaysian pets apply to animals entering the country. A pet that stays airside between flights is handled differently, and the ground agent confirms that arrangement for each booking.

Route shapes from Kuala Lumpur, compared

Quick answer

Three routings are realistic from Kuala Lumpur: nonstop to Auckland, Singapore then Auckland, or Singapore then Christchurch. Each adds a different cost — crate hours, a transit jurisdiction, or a tighter facility choice at the other end.

Routing Sectors Lands at What it adds
Kuala Lumpur to Auckland One Auckland Nothing — no transit country, fewest crate hours
Via Singapore to Auckland Two Auckland One transit jurisdiction and a ground handling arrangement
Via Singapore to Christchurch Two Christchurch Same transit, plus a single facility to book at the other end
Auckland, then domestic to Christchurch Two Auckland Quarantine happens where the pet lands — treat as after release, not before

What happens in the first hours after landing

Quick answer

The crate is offloaded to the cargo terminal and MPI inspects the animal at the border. Because the pet came from Malaysia, it is then directed to an approved transitional facility. An MPI veterinarian examines it there within 72 hours of arrival.

Owners often picture a reunion at the arrivals hall. It does not happen. Your pet is in the cargo system, and the sequence at either New Zealand arrival airport runs like this:

  1. Offload and delivery to the cargo terminal. The crate is moved out of the hold and held airside until documents are presented.
  2. MPI border inspection. An inspector checks the animal and the paperwork to decide clearance or direction to a facility. This inspection is charged.
  3. Direction to quarantine. For a Malaysian pet this is automatic, not a penalty.
  4. Transfer by the facility. The quarantine operator collects the animal and drives it to the facility.
  5. Veterinary inspection within 72 hours. An MPI veterinarian examines the animal at the facility and the ten-day minimum runs from there.

Nothing in that list depends on you being in the country. Many families land days later and collect the pet at the end of quarantine instead.

What MPI charges at the border

Quick answer

MPI’s own charges are the same at Auckland and Christchurch. The first pet inspection is NZ$374.05 including GST, each additional cat or dog NZ$124.68, and the Category 3 import permit NZ$268.24. Facility fees sit on top and are set by each operator.

Two lines on that chart are worth reading twice. The veterinary hourly rate applies to waiting time as well as examination, and inspection time beyond the first 90 minutes is charged again at the same rate. Both are driven by how complete the file is when the aircraft lands.

Choose the airport by where you will live

Quick answer

Pick the arrival airport on the same island as your new home. Auckland suits every North Island move, including Wellington. Christchurch suits Canterbury, Otago, Queenstown and Nelson, because the pet is released into the island it needs to be on.

The reason is the release moment. Your pet leaves quarantine as an ordinary domestic animal, and whatever distance remains is covered by road or on a domestic flight you arrange yourself. Choose the wrong pet arrival airport and a Nelson-bound dog finishes its ten-day stay with a Cook Strait crossing still ahead of it.

  • Auckland, Hamilton, Tauranga, Wellington. Use Auckland — two facilities and the widest flight choice.
  • Christchurch, Dunedin, Queenstown, Nelson. Use Christchurch — one facility, but no island transfer afterwards.
  • Undecided on a city. Use Auckland. It is easier to add a domestic leg after release than to move an in-progress quarantine booking.

The ten-day clock, stage by stage

Quick answer

Ten days is a minimum, not a booking. MPI can hold an animal longer if a requirement was missed, if it is unwell, if ectoparasites are found, or if it cannot be safely examined. Release inspections also only happen in normal business hours.

Quarantine stay Minimum 10 days Facility staff Treatment, retesting, or an unmet import requirement
Release inspection Day 10 or later MPI veterinarian Business hours only, so a weekend end date slips

Where the airport decision goes wrong

Quick answer

Most arrival problems trace back to one habit — booking the flight before the quarantine space. With three facilities serving two airports, the space is scarcer than the seat, and every other date in the file hangs off it.

The failures we see repeat:

  • Flight first, facility second. The aircraft has room in March; the facility does not. The flight is then rebooked at cost.
  • Assuming release on day ten. Release inspections run in business hours, and a delay found on the day is normal, not exceptional.
  • Breed refused before it flies. Some dogs cannot be imported at all — check the dog breeds banned from import into New Zealand before booking anything.
  • Certificates dated to the wrong standard. The 2026 import health standard came into force on 1 July 2026 with a nine-month transition, so a file can be built correctly under either standard — but only one, consistently. Cat owners should read which blood tests a cat needs for New Zealand before the vet draws anything.
  • Crate too small for the sector. A crate that fails at check-in is a missed flight, not a delayed one.

Conclusion: the airport is the first fixed point

Quick answer

Auckland and Christchurch are the only New Zealand pet arrival airports, and the right one is whichever sits on your island with a facility that has space. Everything else in the move — the permit, the flight, the last leg — is built backwards from that.

The corridor is open and the process is predictable. What catches families out is treating the arrival airport as a preference rather than the constraint it is. Decide the island, secure the quarantine space, then let the flight follow.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Which New Zealand airports accept pets from Malaysia?

Auckland and Christchurch are the only New Zealand pet arrival airports. MPI’s guidance states that cats and dogs are cleared for entry or transferred to a quarantine facility from those two airports. A Malaysian pet is always transferred to a facility rather than cleared at the border.

2. Can my pet arrive in Wellington or Queenstown?

No. Neither has an MPI-approved cat and dog quarantine facility behind it, so neither accepts pet arrivals. Both are reachable after release, by road or on a domestic flight you arrange separately.

3. Is there a nonstop flight from Kuala Lumpur to a pet arrival airport?

Auckland is served nonstop from Kuala Lumpur. Christchurch is not, and is normally reached through Singapore. Whether a given flight can carry your pet is a separate question answered by the operating carrier at booking.

4. Should I choose the airport or the quarantine facility first?

The facility. Three approved facilities serve the two airports, two near Auckland and one near Christchurch, and their space is the scarcest part of the whole move. The airport follows the booking.

5. How long does my pet stay at the airport itself?

Only long enough for offload, the MPI border inspection and transfer to the facility. The stay that matters is at the quarantine facility, where the minimum is 10 days and an MPI veterinarian inspects the animal within 72 hours of arrival.

6. What does MPI charge when a pet lands?

NZ$374.05 including GST for the first cat or dog inspected, NZ$124.68 for each additional animal, and NZ$268.24 for the Category 3 import permit. Veterinary time is charged at NZ$249.37 an hour. Quarantine facility fees are separate and set by the operator.
