Malaysia–Singapore

Cost to Move a Pet Between Singapore and Malaysia

The cost to move a pet between Singapore and Malaysia depends almost entirely on which way you are going. Singapore to Malaysia usually runs RM 2,800 to RM 6,500. Malaysia to Singapore runs RM 8,000 to RM 15,000, because Singapore places Malaysia in its highest rabies-risk band and requires thirty days of quarantine.

Introduction: one causeway, two very different bills

Quick answer

Kuala Lumpur to Singapore is about 350 kilometres. The drive is the same in both directions, but the paperwork is not. One direction has no compulsory quarantine. The other has thirty days of it, and that single difference triples the bill.

Most owners planning a Causeway move price it like a long taxi ride. Short distance, one land border, a few forms. That assumption holds in one direction and collapses in the other.

Malaysia treats Singapore as a low-risk origin. Singapore does not return the favour. Singapore sorts every exporting country into three rabies-risk schedules, and Malaysia sits outside the two easy ones. A dog crossing the same bridge in the opposite direction spends a month in a government kennel before it goes home.

This guide prices both directions separately, using the fees Singapore and Malaysia actually publish, in the way we quote them at My Pet Mover under our Malaysia to Singapore pet transport service. Before the figures, it helps to see what a month inside Singapore’s quarantine centre actually looks like.

What does it cost to move a pet between Singapore and Malaysia?

Quick answer

Budget RM 2,800 to RM 6,500 going north into Malaysia, and RM 8,000 to RM 15,000 going south into Singapore. Size moves the number by a few thousand ringgit. Direction moves it by a factor of three, because only one direction pays for quarantine.

Read a Causeway quote by direction first and by pet size second. Most owners do it the other way round, then cannot understand why a beagle costs more than a Great Dane on the same road.

Our wider view of what it costs to fly a dog overseas sets these lines against longer routes. Our published relocation pricing shows where our own fee sits inside these bands.

Notice the statutory column. Going north it is small change. Going south it is a third of the whole bill before anyone has loaded a crate.

Why the southbound trip costs three times the northbound one

Quick answer

Singapore sorts exporting countries into three rabies-risk schedules. Malaysia is not named in Schedule I or Schedule II, so it falls into Schedule III by default. Schedule III means a rabies blood test, a ninety-day wait, and at least thirty days of quarantine on arrival.

The Animal and Veterinary Service publishes the schedules in full. Schedule I covers Australia, New Zealand, Ireland and the United Kingdom. Schedule II names about thirty countries and territories, from Japan and Hong Kong to most of western Europe and the United States. Schedule III is everything else, by definition rather than by naming.

Malaysia is everything else. That is the whole explanation for the price gap, and it produces four separate costs the northbound trip never touches:

  • A rabies serology test. Blood must be drawn at least twenty-eight days after a valid rabies vaccination, at a laboratory recognised for the purpose. Malaysian samples usually travel abroad for testing, so courier and lab together run RM 700 to RM 1,300.
  • A ninety-day waiting period. The blood draw must sit at least ninety days before export, and no more than twelve months. This is a calendar cost rather than a cash one, but it is the line that most often forces a change of flight or lease dates.
  • Thirty days of kennelling. Accommodation at the Animal Quarantine Centre is charged per animal per day, and a month adds up quickly.
  • A rabies dose on arrival. Schedule III animals are vaccinated again at the quarantine centre, at the owner’s cost.

Going the other way, Malaysia asks for a health certificate, a permit and a compliant crate. Our guide to driving a dog to Singapore via the Causeway walks the road side of both journeys. Our note on the AVS licence for bringing a pet into Singapore covers the licence itself.

Is Singapore a scheduled country for Malaysia?

Quick answer

Yes. Malaysia’s Department of Veterinary Services names Singapore in its scheduled countries list, most recently in a notice dated 13 March 2026. The scheduled countries regulation contains no quarantine clause, which is why the northbound trip is the cheap one.

The current DVS notice updating the country lists puts Singapore alongside the United Kingdom, Japan, Brunei and a group of European states. The scheduled countries regulation itself asks for a permit, a microchip, a health certificate and rabies vaccination, then goes straight to the breed list. No quarantine clause appears in it at all.

Two caveats deserve saying plainly, because both can change a quote.

  • The published documents do not fully agree with each other. An earlier version of the same notice, dated December 2025, listed Singapore as scheduled while its non-scheduled definition omitted Singapore from the exclusions. The March 2026 version tidies this up, but the underlying English regulation still carries its 2013 revision date.
  • Third-party pet travel sites report a fourteen-day quarantine applying broadly from late December 2024. That figure appears in DVS’s own Australia-specific protocol. It does not appear in the scheduled countries regulation. Where sources disagree like this, confirm the day count with MAQIS in writing before you budget.

Our explainer on scheduled versus non-scheduled countries unpacks why the label and the quarantine outcome are separate questions. Three price comparisons make the point. The cost to bring a dog from the UK to Malaysia is another scheduled origin. The cost to bring a dog from Australia to Malaysia shows a country with its own rulebook and compulsory quarantine. The cost to bring a pet from China to Malaysia shows what non-scheduled status adds. The Malaysian permit works the same way from any origin, as our walkthrough of the MAQIS import permit application sets out.

Singapore’s quarantine bill, day by day

Quick answer

Thirty days at the Animal Quarantine Centre costs S$780 in a fan room or S$1,050 with air conditioning at the rates in force from December 2025. Those rates rise again in December 2026, to S$1,080 and S$1,320 for the same thirty days.

Singapore is midway through a staged fee increase, and the older figures still circulate widely. AVS has published the whole ladder: accommodation moves from S$16.80 to S$36 per day for fan rooms, and from S$26.25 to S$44 per day for air-conditioned rooms, staggered across two annual steps.

Thirty Days of Singapore Quarantine, by Fee Era

Accommodation cost of a thirty-day quarantine stay in Singapore across three fee eras and two room types.
Room and fee era Per day Thirty-day total In Singapore dollars About, in ringgit
Fan room, old rate S$16.80
S$504 RM 1,714
Fan room, from 1 Dec 2025 S$26
S$780 RM 2,652
Air-conditioned, from 1 Dec 2025 S$35
S$1,050 RM 3,570
Fan room, from 1 Dec 2026 S$36
S$1,080 RM 3,672
Air-conditioned, from 1 Dec 2026 S$44
S$1,320 RM 4,488

Source: AVS published quarantine fee schedule, 2025–2026. Ringgit figures converted at about RM 3.40.

Two fixed charges sit on top of accommodation. Transfer from Tuas Checkpoint or Changi to the quarantine centre is S$75 per animal per trip, and the rabies vaccination given to Schedule III arrivals is S$68 per animal. Neither scales with the length of stay.

One detail catches owners out. Applications submitted before 1 December 2025 were held at the old rates, so a 2025 quote for a 2026 move may sit on a number that no longer applies. Our breakdown of pet quarantine cost in Malaysia shows how much cheaper the equivalent Malaysian stay is.

When each fee falls due on a Causeway move

Quick answer

A southbound move needs about five months of runway. The rabies vaccination goes in first, the blood draw follows twenty-eight days later, and the earliest lawful export date is ninety days after that draw. Everything else clusters into the final month.

Spend does not arrive evenly. The first four months cost a few hundred ringgit and buy nothing but eligibility. The last five weeks carry almost the whole bill.

Southbound Move Countdown and Spend

Timeline of tasks and typical spend for moving a pet from Malaysia into Singapore, counted in days from departure.
Day count What happens Side Typical spend
Day −150 Microchip verified, rabies vaccination given Malaysia RM 250–600
Day −122 Earliest valid blood draw, twenty-eight days after vaccination Malaysia RM 700–1,300
Day −90 Earliest lawful export date, ninety days after the draw Both Nil
Day −60 Quarantine space reserved, dog or cat licence obtained Singapore Licence fee applies
Day −30 Import licence applied for, valid ninety days from issue Singapore S$50 or S$100
Day −7 to −2 Parasite treatments and veterinary health certificate Malaysia RM 250–650
Day −5 Border inspection appointment booked Singapore Nil if booked
Day 0 Tuas clearance, transfer to quarantine, rabies dose Singapore S$143
Day +30 Release, between ten and noon on the release date Singapore S$780–1,320

Source: AVS published import conditions and My Pet Mover casework, 2024–2026. Dates are the earliest permitted, not a recommendation to cut it fine.

Two dates on that table are unforgiving. Quarantine cannot be extended, so the pet must be collected on its release date. The health certificate window is only five days wide, so a vet appointment that slips can void the whole crossing.

Road or air on a 350-kilometre move

Quick answer

Road wins on almost every measure for a Causeway move. It costs roughly half as much as air freight, halves the number of times the crate changes hands, and clears at Tuas Checkpoint instead of an airport cargo terminal.

Air freight earns its keep on long routes. On this one, the aircraft adds handling rather than removing it.

Road Versus Air on the Causeway Route

Inspection point Tuas Checkpoint Changi Animal and Plant Quarantine
Tarmac heat exposure None Loading and unloading windows

Source: My Pet Mover casework on Kuala Lumpur to Singapore files, 2024–2026. Air figures assume standard cargo, not excess baggage.

Air only makes sense in narrow cases, such as an owner already flying with a pet that qualifies to travel on the same booking, or a restricted breed whose road movement needs extra approvals. Our notes on IATA crate sizing for dogs and what happens at KLIA on cargo flight day cover the air option. Our guide to pet crossings at Tuas Checkpoint covers the road one.

Breed rules that can stop a move before it starts

Quick answer

Both countries ban pit bull types, the Akita, the Tosa, the Dogo Argentino, the Fila Brasileiro and the Neapolitan Mastiff. The lists are close but not identical, and Singapore adds housing rules that Malaysia does not.

Check the breed before you spend anything else. A banned breed cannot be permitted at any price, and a restricted one adds weeks of written approvals.

  • Banned on both sides. Pit bull types, Akita, American Bulldog, Dogo Argentino, Fila Brasileiro, Tosa and Neapolitan Mastiff appear on both the Malaysian and Singaporean prohibited lists.
  • Restricted in Malaysia only. Bull Mastiff, Bull Terrier, Doberman, German Shepherd, Rottweiler and Perro de Presa Canario need written approval from MAQIS before a permit application can even be lodged.
  • Housing limits in Singapore. Where the pet will live matters. Flats cap the number of animals per unit, and some breeds are not permitted in public housing at all.
  • Cat breeds count too. Singapore restricts early-generation Bengal and Savannah crosses, and asks for documentary proof of generation before import.

Malaysian councils also license dogs locally, usually RM 10 to RM 50 a year, and some refuse licences for high-rise addresses. Our list of banned dog breeds in Malaysia sets out the Malaysian side in full.

Conclusion: three numbers settle a Causeway quote

Quick answer

Your direction of travel, your quarantine days and your breed status decide nearly the whole bill. Settle those three and the cost to move a pet between Singapore and Malaysia becomes a plannable expense rather than an open question.

The Causeway is the shortest international pet move in the region and the least symmetrical. Northbound is a permit, a certificate and a drive. Southbound is a five-month schedule with a month of kennelling at the end of it.

All three drivers are knowable before you commit anything. Confirm the direction, get the quarantine position in writing from the receiving authority, and check the breed on day one. Everything after that is arithmetic. If you would rather have it handled, our Malaysian pet import team runs the whole chain from the first vaccination to your door.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to move a pet between Singapore and Malaysia?

Singapore to Malaysia usually costs RM 2,800 to RM 6,500 all-in. Malaysia to Singapore usually costs RM 8,000 to RM 15,000, because Singapore requires a rabies blood test, a ninety-day wait and at least thirty days of quarantine on arrival. Direction matters more than the size of the animal.

Does my dog need quarantine going from Singapore to Malaysia?

Malaysia lists Singapore as a scheduled country, most recently in a Department of Veterinary Services notice dated 13 March 2026, and the scheduled countries regulation contains no quarantine clause. Some third-party sites report a fourteen-day rule applying more widely since late 2024, so confirm the day count with MAQIS in writing before you book.

How long is pet quarantine in Singapore coming from Malaysia?

At least thirty days at the Animal Quarantine Centre. Malaysia is not listed in Singapore’s Schedule I or Schedule II, so it falls into Schedule III, which carries the longest stay. Animals from Schedule III origins are also given a rabies vaccination on arrival at the owner’s cost.

What does Singapore charge for pet quarantine per day?

From 1 December 2025 the accommodation fee is S$26 per animal per day in a fan-fitted room and S$35 in an air-conditioned room. From 1 December 2026 those rise to S$36 and S$44. Transfer to the centre is S$75 per animal, and the arrival rabies dose is S$68.

How far in advance should I start a Malaysia to Singapore pet move?

Allow about five months. The rabies blood sample can only be drawn twenty-eight days after vaccination, and it must then sit at least ninety days before the export date. Quarantine space is booked ahead, and the health certificate is only valid within a short window before departure.
