Malaysia to New Zealand Pet Export & Import
A Malaysia to New Zealand pet export flies direct, with no staging country, because New Zealand lists Malaysia as an approved Category 3 origin. The price is a six-month rabies clock and ten days of quarantine in Auckland or Christchurch. The other direction is far simpler: New Zealand is a scheduled country, so there is no quarantine on arrival in Malaysia.
Malaysia to New Zealand Pet Export: One Corridor, Two Speeds
Both directions are open and neither needs a third country. A Malaysia to New Zealand pet export takes six to nine months and ends with ten days of quarantine. Coming the other way takes six to eight weeks and ends at the airport, because New Zealand sits on Malaysia's scheduled list.
- Flying to New Zealand. Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak are approved origins, so the pet flies direct on the Category 3 protocol, then serves ten days in quarantine.
- Flying to Malaysia. New Zealand is a scheduled country, so a healthy pet with complete papers leaves KLIA the same day.
This surprises people who have already researched Australia. My Pet Mover works out of the Klang Valley, minutes from KLIA, and files as the authorised agent on the Malaysian side. Most people assume the two countries share a rulebook. They do not, and the difference decides your timeline.
Why New Zealand Accepts Malaysian Pets When Australia Does Not
New Zealand keeps its own approved-country schedule and Malaysia is on it as a Category 3 origin. Australia keeps a separate list, and Malaysia is not on that one. Same region, same pet, two different answers.
New Zealand groups approved origins into three categories: Australia, the rabies-free group, and places where rabies is absent or well controlled. Malaysia sits in that third group, listed in the ministry's Specified Approvals for Animal Import Health Standards as Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak.
Read that entry carefully. It names three territories, so an owner based in Labuan should not assume cover. Malaysia splits origins by list too, as our explainer on scheduled versus non-scheduled countries sets out.
The practical result is what matters. A move to Australia has to be staged through a third country for months, which is why our Malaysia to Australia corridor page reads as a year-long project. A move to New Zealand does not, and the pet stays home the whole time.
What Each End Requires, Both Directions
Set the two columns side by side and the asymmetry is obvious. New Zealand asks for a permit, an antibody test, a long testing panel and ten days of quarantine. Malaysia asks for an agent-filed permit, a vaccination record and a direct flight.
Every row comes from the two authorities' published requirements, including the chip standard in our note on microchip rules for Malaysia.
Entry Requirements, Both Directions (2026)
| Requirement | Flying Malaysia to New Zealand | Flying New Zealand to Malaysia |
|---|---|---|
| Permit | MPI import permit, one per consignment, applied for online | MAQIS import permit, agent-lodged only |
| Microchip | Required, and scanned by an official vet before the blood test | ISO 11784 and 11785 compliant |
| Rabies vaccine | From 12 weeks of age; a first shot at least 6 months before the flight | Approved anti-rabies vaccine before export, no waiting period |
| Antibody titre | RNATT at 0.5 IU/ml or above, sampled 3 to 12 months out | Not required |
| Disease panel | Dogs: Babesia, Brucella canis, heartworm, Leishmania, leptospirosis. Cats: none | None beyond core vaccines within 12 months |
| Health certificate | Official vet inspection in the 2 days before shipment | Government vet certificate, examined within 7 days of export |
| Travel mode | Manifested cargo; any transit stop in a categorised country | Carried by aircraft direct to a prescribed landing place |
| Arrival airport | Auckland or Christchurch | KLIA and other approved entry points |
| Quarantine on arrival | Minimum 10 days in an approved facility | None, subject to health and documents |
The Six-Month Clock That Starts With One Injection
If your pet is getting its first rabies shot for this move, no flight to New Zealand is possible for six months from that date. The antibody blood test must then sit at least three months before departure. The two clocks run together.
This is the figure that decides everything else. Under the 2026 standard, a primary rabies vaccination must be given not less than six months before shipment, and the animal must be at least twelve weeks old when vaccinated.
The blood test has its own window. The rabies neutralising antibody sample must be drawn three to twelve months before the flight and come back at 0.5 IU/ml or higher. Vets normally wait three to four weeks after vaccinating before drawing it.
A second rule catches owners who start late. An official vet must scan the microchip before the blood is drawn. Where the sample is taken less than six months before the flight, the chip has to be scanned twice, the first scan at least six months out. Book it early or the clock restarts.
A pet already carrying a current rabies vaccination and a valid titre may be only weeks from eligible, which is why we ask for the vaccination card first.
What Happens in Which Month, Both Directions
Southbound, the work spreads across nine months and clusters in the last thirty days. Northbound, almost nothing happens until eight weeks out. The table maps both onto one calendar.
Timing errors, not paperwork errors, usually reset a Malaysia to New Zealand pet export. The final test window is tight enough that one missed appointment pushes the flight by a month. Our note on flight day at KLIA covers what happens then.

Ten Days in Auckland, Nothing at KLIA
Every cat and dog on a Malaysia to New Zealand pet export goes into an approved quarantine facility for at least ten days, with a government vet inspection within seventy-two hours of landing and again at the end. Arriving in Malaysia, there is none at all.
Ten days is the minimum, not the promise. The stay runs longer if the animal arrives unwell, carries ticks or fleas, or the paperwork does not match. Facilities are private businesses, so the boarding bill comes from them, and space must be booked before the permit application is complete.
The northbound arrival is different. A pet flying in from New Zealand is not detained, because Malaysia treats it as a scheduled origin. Our page on pet quarantine at KLIA covers everywhere else.
Where the Days Go, by Stage
| Stage | Typical days | Relative length |
|---|---|---|
| Rabies vaccination to earliest flight | 180 | |
| Blood sample to earliest flight | 90 | |
| Import permit processing | 30 working days | |
| Final testing and treatment window | 30 | |
| Quarantine on arrival in New Zealand | 10 | |
| Quarantine on arrival in Malaysia | 0 | None |
New Zealand to Malaysia Pet Import Is the Easy Leg
This leg needs an agent-filed permit, a microchip, a rabies vaccination, current core vaccines and a government health certificate issued within seven days of travel. There is no antibody test, no waiting period and no quarantine at KLIA.
New Zealand's own guidance confirms the shape of it. The ministry's guidance for dogs and cats to Malaysia states there is no waiting period between the rabies vaccination and export, and that the animal must fly directly to an approved landing place.
Two conditions do the quiet work. The certificate must confirm no rabies has been reported in the exporting country in the six months before it is issued, which New Zealand meets comfortably. It must also confirm the animal itself was not imported into New Zealand in that same period.
The permit is the one piece owners cannot do themselves. Only an authorised agent may lodge a MAQIS application, as our note on why you cannot file your own permit explains.
The Six-Month Rule That Blocks a Quick Turnaround
A pet imported into New Zealand within the past six months cannot use the scheduled-country route into Malaysia. The health certificate has to state the animal was not imported during that window, so a recent arrival has to wait it out.
This clause rarely appears in general guides, and it catches one family in particular: the household posted to Auckland on a short assignment that ends early. The dog flew south in March, the posting is cut in September, and the certificate cannot be signed the way the scheduled route needs.
The routing rule creates a second version of the same problem. Malaysia requires direct carriage by aircraft from a scheduled country, so an itinerary that stops somewhere off that list puts the exemption at risk. A cheaper two-stop fare can quietly cost a week of quarantine.
- Check residency first. If the pet entered New Zealand less than six months ago, plan around that date, not the flight schedule.
- Hold the routing. Direct carriage protects the exemption.
- Confirm before booking. Schedules on this corridor change by season and cargo space is finite.
Breed Rules Bite at Both Ends
Both countries block certain dogs and the lists only partly overlap. New Zealand prohibits four breeds and one type under its dog control law. Malaysia bans seven and restricts six more, the restricted group needing written approval first.
New Zealand's prohibition sits in the Dog Control Act 1996 and covers the Brazilian Fila, Dogo Argentino, Japanese Tosa, Perro de Presa Canario and the American Pit Bull Terrier type. No permit overrides it.
Malaysia's list is longer and works differently. Seven breeds are banned outright, among them the Akita, Dogo Argentino and the Pit Bull group. Six more are restricted, including the Rottweiler, Doberman and German Shepherd, and importing one needs written approval plus a home inspection before the permit.
The partial overlap is the trap. A Dogo Argentino is refused at both ends. A German Shepherd flies south without comment but needs a full approval file to come back, as our page on banned and restricted dog breeds explains.
Pet Shipping Malaysia New Zealand: What Each Direction Costs
Southbound is the expensive half, because the testing panel and ten days of boarding both sit inside the bill. Northbound has neither. Pricing is quoted per animal once we see the breed, weight, crate size and travel month; the bands below are indicative.
Two lines are published figures, not estimates. The Category 3 import permit is NZ$268.24 including GST and the border inspection for the first cat or dog is NZ$374.05, both on the ministry's fees and charges page. Quarantine boarding is not a government fee; facilities set their own rates.
Indicative Cost Stack, per Animal (2026)
| Cost line | Indicative range (RM) |
|---|---|

| Import permit and border inspection (billed in NZD) | 1,500 – 1,800 |
| Air cargo, Kuala Lumpur to Auckland | 4,000 – 8,000 |
| Crate, export documents and vet endorsement | 900 – 2,200 |
| Ten days at an approved quarantine facility | 1,800 – 3,800 |
| Indicative total, southbound | 10,700 – 20,800 |
| New Zealand to Malaysia | |
| MAQIS permit and agent filing | 600 – 1,200 |
| New Zealand vet work and endorsement | 800 – 1,800 |
| Air cargo, Auckland to Kuala Lumpur | 3,500 – 7,000 |
| IATA crate | 400 – 1,200 |
| Quarantine on arrival | Nil, scheduled country |
| Clearance, handling and home delivery | 700 – 1,500 |
| Indicative total, northbound | 6,000 – 12,700 |
Strip the testing panel and the boarding line out of the southbound column and the two directions land within a few thousand ringgit of each other. Both rows are regulatory, not commercial. Full bands sit on our pet relocation pricing page, and the flight alone is broken down in what it costs to fly a dog overseas.
Starting Your New Zealand Corridor Move
Start with the vaccination card, not the flight search. That one document tells us whether your pet is six months from eligible or six weeks. Everything else can be booked around it.
Handled properly, a Malaysia to New Zealand pet export is a nine-month project with a short quarantine at the end. The families who find it calm started the paperwork before the house-hunting. The reverse leg is a six to eight week booking exercise.
We handle both directions end to end from the Klang Valley: permits, laboratory scheduling, quarantine bookings, crates, cargo and the drive home. If your move touches more than one country, our Japan corridor page, Canada corridor page and Singapore corridor page show how the rules compare.

Answers
Frequently Asked Questions
Can my pet fly straight from Malaysia to New Zealand?
Yes. Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak are approved Category 3 origins, so no staging country is needed. A Malaysia to New Zealand pet export flies direct as manifested cargo into Auckland or Christchurch.
How long is quarantine in New Zealand?
A minimum of ten days in an approved facility. A government vet inspects the animal within seventy-two hours of arrival and again at the end. It runs longer if the pet is unwell or carries external parasites.
Does a pet arriving from New Zealand have to be quarantined in Malaysia?
No. New Zealand is on Malaysia's scheduled country list, so a healthy animal with complete documents is cleared on arrival. It must be carried by aircraft directly to an approved landing place.
How far ahead should I start?
Six to nine months for a move to New Zealand, because a first rabies vaccination cannot be less than six months before the flight. Six to eight weeks is enough coming the other way, once an agent is appointed.
