International Pet Transport From Malaysia: Routes
International pet transport Malaysia works in two directions, and the two halves of one route rarely match. Whether your pet is held at the KLIA quarantine station depends on a single government list. Whether it can fly at all depends on the destination. This hub sets out the ten corridors we run, both ways, with the quarantine outcome, the preparation window and the cost band for each.
What International Pet Transport Malaysia Actually Covers
International pet transport Malaysia covers two regulated movements. Bringing a dog or cat in needs a MAQIS import permit that only an authorised agent may lodge. Sending one out runs under the destination country's rules. We handle both from the Klang Valley, minutes from KLIA.
Two jobs sit behind every enquiry here, and they are not the same job.
- Bringing a pet in. An import into Malaysia is governed by one set of rules written by the Department of Veterinary Services and enforced by MAQIS at the border.
- Sending a pet out. An export from Malaysia is governed by whichever country your pet is flying to. Malaysia barely constrains it; the destination does all the work.
My Pet Mover is an international relocation agency, not a local pet service. We move animals across borders by air, and we do not run pet taxis, boarding, grooming or retail.
Before the routes themselves, one video worth ten minutes β most of these moves fly in the hold, and owners worry about that more than the paperwork.
The International Pet Transport Routes We Run From KLIA
We publish a corridor page for ten countries, each covering both directions. The inbound half is decided by one document: the Department of Veterinary Services list of scheduled countries. Origins on that list skip quarantine at KLIA. Everywhere else serves a compulsory period of not less than seven days.
Most guides treat these routes as ten separate problems. They are not. The inbound half of all ten is one problem with ten answers, and every answer comes from a single page.
A Department of Veterinary Services notice dated 11 December 2025 republished both country lists. The updated regulation for non-scheduled countries now names twenty-two scheduled origins, up from eight. Singapore was added, Australia taken off. A pet arriving from anywhere else is detained for at least seven days, extendable on risk assessment.
The outbound half has no such shortcut. Ten destinations, ten rulebooks, and the gap between easiest and hardest is measured in months. Our explainer on scheduled versus non-scheduled countries unpacks the inbound rule, and the KLIA quarantine station guide covers what the seven days involve.
Quarantine Outcome on Every Route, Both Directions
Four of our ten origins clear KLIA without quarantine: Singapore, the United Kingdom, Japan and New Zealand. The other six serve at least seven days. Outbound, the picture inverts β Canada and Britain take a pet with no quarantine at all, while Hong Kong holds one for thirty days.
Set the two directions side by side and the asymmetry stops being an anecdote. Read this table first: it decides how much of your move is waiting and how much is logistics.
Quarantine by Route and Direction (2026)
| Route | Arriving in Malaysia | Arriving at the destination |
|---|---|---|
| Singapore | None — scheduled origin | 30 days minimum |
| Australia | Not less than 7 days | No direct route; staged move, then post-entry quarantine |
| China | Not less than 7 days | 30 days unless an antibody titre exempts the animal |
| United Kingdom | None — scheduled origin | None, but a Nipah certificate is compulsory |
| United States | Not less than 7 days | None with a passing titre; otherwise 28 days |
| Taiwan | Not less than 7 days | 7 days by default; nil with a correctly timed titre |
| Hong Kong | Not less than 7 days | At least 30 days, kennel booked months ahead |
| Japan | None — scheduled origin | Cleared on the day once the 180-day wait is served |
| New Zealand | None — scheduled origin | 10 days in Auckland or Christchurch |
| Canada | Not less than 7 days | None for a personal pet |
Which Pet Relocation Destinations Malaysia Families Choose
Five buyer groups drive almost all of our volume, and each one lives on a different corridor. Causeway households dominate by count. Retirees and professionals arriving on long-stay visas dominate the inbound long-haul routes. Malaysians emigrating dominate the hardest outbound routes.
The pet relocation destinations Malaysia families choose are not random. They track migration, and migration here runs along a few well-worn lines.
- Causeway households. The Singapore corridor is the busiest by a wide margin, and the only one of the ten with a land option.
- Arrivals on long-stay visas. China, Taiwan and Hong Kong send the most inbound enquiries, and all three are non-scheduled origins.
- Malaysians emigrating. Australia, New Zealand, Britain, the United States and Canada β booked furthest ahead, and costliest to start late.
- Expatriates going home. Repatriations on a date the employer has already fixed, with no room to slip.
- Owners importing a new animal. Bought or adopted overseas, usually discovering at deposit stage that the permit cannot be filed personally.
What none of them expects is that difficulty has nothing to do with distance. Canada is on the other side of the planet and takes a pet with almost no ceremony. Singapore is forty minutes away and wants a blood test drawn ninety days out. Sorting the overseas pet transport Malaysia owners actually need starts with the rulebook, not the map.
How Long Each Route Takes to Prepare
Leaving Malaysia, the spread runs from about a month to well over a year. Canada is the quickest. Australia is the slowest, because Malaysia is not an approved country of export and the pet must live somewhere else first. Everything between is set by a laboratory clock.
Preparation time is not admin time. On most routes the calendar is dominated by one fixed wait after a rabies antibody blood draw, and nothing shortens it.
Preparation Window Leaving Malaysia (Weeks)
| Destination | Typical window | Relative length |
|---|---|---|
| Canada | 4–8 weeks | |
| United Kingdom | 6–10 weeks | |
| United States | 8–14 weeks | |
| China | 12–20 weeks | |
| Hong Kong | 13–26 weeks | |
| Singapore | About 21 weeks | |
| Taiwan | 16–26 weeks | |
| Japan | 26–34 weeks | |
| New Zealand | 26–39 weeks | |
| Australia | 35–65 weeks |
On the four longest routes, the flight is booked in the final fortnight of a project that started the better part of a year earlier.
What Each Route Family Costs
Every move is quoted individually, because crate size, airline acceptance and quarantine nights all move the number. The bands below group the ten routes into five families so you can see roughly where yours lands before you ask for a figure.
Two routes of identical distance can differ by a factor of three, and the reason is almost always a mandatory stay somewhere. A quarantine night is a bed, a handler and a vet inspection, billed as such at both ends. That is why an international pet transport Malaysia quotation starts with the rules, not the airfare.
Indicative Cost Bands by Route Family
| Route family | From (RM) | ≈ USD | ≈ SGD |
|---|---|---|---|
| Short-haul into Malaysia, scheduled origin | 3,000–5,000 | 760–1,270 | 940–1,570 |
| Regional into Malaysia, with KLIA quarantine | 5,000–9,000 | 1,270–2,280 | 1,570–2,820 |
| Long-haul into Malaysia, with KLIA quarantine | 6,000–11,000 | 1,520–2,780 | 1,880–3,450 |
| Long-haul out of Malaysia, no arrival quarantine | 8,000–15,000 | 2,030–3,800 | 2,510–4,700 |
| Long-prep or staged routes out of Malaysia | 15,000 and above | 3,800 and above | 4,700 and above |
These are ranges, not quotes. A snub-nosed breed, an oversized crate or a route with no direct service pushes a move above its band, and we would rather say so at enquiry stage than at invoice stage. Our pricing page sets out what sits inside a quotation.
What Changed on These Routes Since 2020
Four decisions taken outside Malaysia have reshaped these corridors in six years. One closed a route entirely, two narrowed who may use a route, and the fourth rewrote which arrivals are held at KLIA. Guides written before December 2025 are out of date on the inbound half.
Almost no other page tracks this, and it is why we date everything we publish.
Rule Changes Affecting Malaysian Routes, 2020–2025
| When | What changed | Routes affected |
|---|---|---|
| 2020 | Australia suspended direct imports of dogs and cats from Malaysia and removed the country from its approved list | Malaysia to Australia |
| Sep 2022 | Canada stopped permitting commercial dogs from countries it lists as high risk for dog rabies | Malaysia to Canada |
| Aug 2024 | A new United States dog importation rule took effect, with extra conditions for high-risk origins | Malaysia to United States |
| Dec 2025 | Malaysia's veterinary authority republished both country lists, widening the scheduled list to twenty-two origins, adding Singapore and dropping Australia | All inbound routes |
Routes Without a Corridor Page Yet
Ten corridors have their own page. We move animals well beyond those ten, and the destinations we are asked about most often already have a written guide even where the full corridor page is still being built.
A missing page is not a missing service. These are the next most requested destinations, each with a guide already written:
- Malaysia to Dubai and the wider Gulf, including Qatar and Saudi Arabia.
- The European Union, where several member states now sit on Malaysia's scheduled list for the return leg.
- Regional moves to Thailand and Indonesia.
- South Korea and India, both regular routes for us in both directions.
If your destination is not named anywhere on this site, ask anyway. Every route has the same shape: confirm eligibility, work backwards from the fixed waiting periods, then book.
How to Pick the Right Route for Your Move
Work from the destination backwards, not from the departure date forwards. Confirm the animal is eligible, find the longest fixed waiting period on the route, count back from your intended arrival, and only then look at flights and crates.
How to choose an international pet transport route from Malaysia
Five steps, in this order. Doing them out of sequence is the commonest reason a move slips.
- Check eligibility first. Breed, age and the purpose of the move can rule a route out before any money is spent. Malaysia's banned and restricted breed list applies to every arrival.
- Find the longest fixed clock. On most routes this is a rabies antibody test with a waiting period attached. It cannot be shortened, appealed or paid away.
- Count backwards from arrival. Take your intended arrival date, subtract the fixed clock and any quarantine, and you have the date the first vaccination must happen.
- Lodge the permit through an authorised agent. For any move into Malaysia, the MAQIS import permit cannot be filed by the owner personally.
- Book the crate before the flight. A made-to-measure crate meeting the IATA Live Animals Regulations often takes longer to build than the paperwork takes to clear.
Conclusion
Ten corridors, twenty legs, and no two legs alike. The inbound half of your move is settled by Malaysia's scheduled list; the outbound half by a rulebook written somewhere else. Read your own leg, start from the fixed clock, and the rest is logistics.
Owners usually arrive on this page wanting a price. The more useful thing to leave with is a date β the day the first vaccination has to happen for your intended arrival to be possible. Everything else in international pet transport Malaysia can be arranged, rebooked or absorbed. That one date cannot.
Every Corridor Page in This Hub
Ten country pages sit under this hub. Each one covers a single corridor in both directions, with the entry requirements, the timeline and the cost band set out separately for the leg into Malaysia and the leg out of it.

Answers
Frequently Asked Questions
Which countries can I move my pet to from Malaysia?
We publish a corridor page for ten countries and move animals well beyond them, including the Gulf states, the European Union, Thailand, Indonesia, South Korea and India. The limiting factor is never our reach; it is whether the destination accepts animals from Malaysia.
Does my pet go into quarantine when it arrives in Malaysia?
Only if it is flying from a non-scheduled origin. Malaysia's scheduled list, republished in December 2025, names twenty-two places whose animals clear without detention. Everywhere else is non-scheduled, and those arrivals are held for a compulsory period of not less than seven days, extendable on risk assessment.
Which route out of Malaysia takes the longest to prepare?
Australia, by a wide margin. Malaysia is not an approved country of export, so the animal must live in an approved country for a qualifying period before it can fly south. Realistic planning runs from eight to fifteen months. New Zealand and Japan are next, both driven by a six-month waiting period.
Do you handle a country you do not have a page for?
Yes. A missing corridor page reflects publishing order, not capability. Tell us the destination and we will confirm eligibility, the fixed waiting periods and the earliest realistic arrival date.
How much does international pet transport from Malaysia cost?
Every move is quoted individually. As a guide, short-haul arrivals from a scheduled origin start around RM3,000, arrivals that serve quarantine at KLIA typically run RM5,000 to RM11,000, and long-preparation or staged departures reach RM15,000 and above. Crate size, breed and airline acceptance move the figure.
Ready to move your pet in or out of Malaysia?
Send us the origin, the destination and your intended arrival date. We will confirm eligibility, work backwards through the fixed waiting periods and come back with a written route plan and a quotation.
