USA to Malaysia Pet Shipping & Export to the US

USA to Malaysia pet shipping ends in quarantine, because Malaysia does not treat the United States as a scheduled country. The return leg is stricter than most families expect. The CDC names Malaysia a high-risk country for dog rabies, so a dog leaving Kuala Lumpur needs a reservation at a registered American facility and a passing antibody titre to avoid 28 days.

Stage 01

The One Corridor Where Both Governments Hold the Pet

Every route we run has an easy end. Singapore has one. Britain has one. This one does not.

USA to Malaysia pet shipping falls outside Malaysia's scheduled list, so an arriving dog or cat goes into quarantine at KLIA. The United States puts Malaysia on its high-risk list for dog rabies, so a departing dog must be booked into an approved American facility before it is allowed on the plane.

Two holding steps, one corridor. My Pet Mover works both directions from the Klang Valley, and only one is compulsory. The other buys down to a single afternoon with one blood test. First, a short explainer on the American rules.

Stage 02

Why the United States Is Not on Malaysia's Scheduled List

Quick answer

Malaysia runs two regulations for dogs and cats, and the departure country decides which applies. The United States is not in the scheduled set, so USA to Malaysia pet shipping falls under the non-scheduled rules and ends in compulsory quarantine, whatever the vaccination record shows. The import permit process follows from that.

The Department of Veterinary Services publishes one rule set for a short list of exempted origins and another for everywhere else. The non-scheduled regulation scopes itself as countries other than the United Kingdom, Eire, Northern Ireland, New Zealand, Japan, Sweden, Brunei and Australia. The United States is not in that group.

A notice of 11 December 2025 widened that list from eight origins to twenty-two, mostly European. The United States was not among them, so nothing changed for this corridor.

That classification decides the quarantine days, the permit route and most of the budget. The table sets both ends side by side.

Stage 03

What USA to Malaysia Pet Shipping Involves, Start to Finish

Quick answer

Seven stages in a fixed order. Breed check, microchip, rabies vaccination, MAQIS permit, an APHIS-endorsed health certificate, the flight into KLIA, then quarantine. Each stage produces the document the next one needs, and only an authorised agent can file the permit.

Most owners begin USA to Malaysia pet shipping at the airline and work backwards. That is the wrong end. Start at the permit, because it is the only stage you cannot complete yourself.

  1. Check the breed against the Malaysian lists. Some breeds are barred outright, others sit behind a premises inspection. A first-week check, not a later one.
  2. Fit an ISO-compliant microchip. The regulation names ISO 11784 and 11785, and the number must match every later document.
  3. Vaccinate against rabies. Use an approved vaccine and keep core vaccines current to the departure date.
  4. Have an authorised agent file the MAQIS import permit. Owners cannot lodge this themselves, which is where most self-managed moves stall.
  5. Obtain the American health certificate. A USDA-accredited veterinarian issues it and APHIS endorses it before the flight.
  6. Fly into a prescribed landing place. The consignment travels as manifested cargo to the approved arrival airport, not loosely through a third country.
  7. Clear MAQIS and enter quarantine. The pet is admitted, may be revaccinated at the department's discretion, and held for the compulsory period.
Stage 04

The Seven Days Are Fixed. The Arrival Day Is Not.

Quick answer

Owners plan hard for the seven quarantine days and barely plan the day the plane lands. That is backwards. The seven days run themselves at the KLIA quarantine station; the arrival day is where a consignment sits, misses a handover or triggers a longer hold.

Three things stretch a stay, and none are decided during quarantine itself.

  • Documents that do not match the animal. A microchip number reading differently from the certificate is the commonest trigger, and it resolves slowly once the pet is inside.
  • Any clinical sign at inspection. The animal is released when it is found free of evidence of infection, so anything ambiguous on arrival buys observation days.
  • A risk assessment on the consignment. The regulation lets the department hold an animal well beyond the minimum where origin or vaccination history warrants it.

Seven days is a floor, not a schedule. Booking the station slot before the flight is confirmed keeps USA to Malaysia pet shipping to that floor. The mechanics of the stay sit on our guide to Malaysia's quarantine day counts.

Stage 05

Going the Other Way: Malaysia Is High-Risk to the CDC

Quick answer

Malaysia sits on the CDC's high-risk countries for dog rabies list, reviewed 15 April 2026. A dog that has been in Malaysia in the previous six months needs a facility reservation, an endorsed vaccination certificate and either a passing titre or 28 days of quarantine. Our pet export service handles the Malaysian half.

Families who have moved pets to Britain or Singapore assume America will be simpler. It is the opposite. The high-risk classification pulls in five requirements at once, and the dog must be at least six months old at entry.

It could be worse. Taiwan's position on pets from Malaysia is harder again, while a Malaysia to UK pet relocation runs on listed-country terms with no titre. The chart puts the holding periods on one scale.

The One Blood Test That Removes 28 Days

Quick answer

A passing rabies serology titre from a CDC-approved laboratory turns a 28-day American quarantine into one afternoon. The timing is unforgiving: the sample must be drawn at least 30 days after the first valid rabies vaccination and at least 28 days before entry. Our guide to the CDC rabies rules covers the paperwork.

This is the highest-value decision on the corridor, and it is made early or not at all. Four conditions govern it.

  • Thirty days after the first valid vaccination. Draw earlier and the result cannot be used, however good the number.
  • Twenty-eight days before entry. A sample drawn inside that window does not qualify the dog, so a late booking cannot be rescued by rushing the laboratory.
  • An approved laboratory only. The CDC maintains its own list and accepts nothing outside it. If none sits in the country, the sample travels to the nearest one.
  • Valid for life, if coverage holds. A passing result stays valid while vaccination never lapses. Let it lapse and the dog needs a booster, then a fresh sample 30 days later.
One blood sample, drawn on the right day, is the difference between four weeks of American quarantine and none at all.
Stage 07

The Countdown, Direction by Direction

Quick answer

Both directions want about four months from a standing start, but the pressure sits in different places. Leaving Malaysia, the titre dates drive everything. In USA to Malaysia pet shipping, the permit does. The Singapore corridor runs far shorter by comparison.

The table counts backwards from the flight, so you can see which stage is late.

Where Your Dog Can Actually Land in the United States

Quick answer

A dog arriving from Malaysia must land at one of six airports with a CDC-registered animal care facility, at the facility where the reservation was made. Domestic connections are barred until the services are done, which reshapes the itinerary and the transit plan before any flight is booked.

The published list of registered facilities covers six cities.

  • New York, JFK only. The dog must land at JFK itself. Newark and LaGuardia do not qualify.
  • Los Angeles. Cargo is the preferred handling; dogs arriving otherwise are transferred to cargo and can face clearance delays.
  • Atlanta, Miami, Philadelphia and Washington Dulles. Each has one registered facility taking reservations direct.

Every itinerary out of Kuala Lumpur connects somewhere. What matters is that the final international leg lands at the facility airport.

Hawaii is its own case. The state runs a rabies quarantine of up to 120 days, with a five-days-or-less programme and direct airport release at Honolulu for animals that qualify. Qualifying needs two rabies vaccinations, a passing antibody test and a 30-day wait completed before arrival, with documents lodged ten days ahead, per the state animal quarantine rules.

Stage 09

Cats Travel on a Different Set of Rules

Quick answer

The American dog importation rule covers dogs. Cats are outside it, so no import form, no facility reservation and no titre requirement applies to a cat leaving Malaysia. The Malaysian side draws no such distinction, and treats cats and dogs alike on entry.

This catches mixed households out. A family flying a dog and a cat to Texas is running two regulatory jobs on one air waybill.

Cats must still appear healthy on arrival and can be refused entry for evidence of a zoonotic disease, and the destination state may add conditions. Hawaii's quarantine applies to cats as it does to dogs.

Coming the other way, nothing about USA to Malaysia pet shipping gets lighter because the animal is a cat. The permit and the minimum quarantine are the same.

Stage 10

What a Malaysia to USA Pet Move Costs

Quick answer

USA to Malaysia pet shipping is quoted rather than priced from a list, because crate size, breed status, titre timing and holding days all move the number. Government and facility charges are set by the authority and confirmed on application. The rest sits inside the ranges on our pet relocation cost page.

The table separates what an authority fixes from what an agent quotes. Ranges are ranges, not offers, and conversions indicative.

Starting Your Malaysia to USA Move

Quick answer

Start with the two things that cannot be rushed: the titre schedule leaving Malaysia, the permit arriving. Send us the direction, the breed and the vaccination record and we will tell you which dates are already binding, then quote through to collection.

This corridor rewards early decisions more than any other we run. Fix the titre date in month one and you fly in the month you wanted. Book flights first and the dog often serves four weeks it did not need to.

USA to Malaysia pet shipping is the predictable half, because the seven days are known from the outset and the permit route is fixed. The American leg swings, and it swings entirely on preparation. Our Malaysia to UK pet relocation and Taiwan corridor pages show how differently the same pet is treated a few thousand kilometres away.

Answers

Frequently Asked Questions

Does my pet have to be quarantined when flying from the United States to Malaysia?

Yes. USA to Malaysia pet shipping runs under the non-scheduled regulation, so an arriving dog or cat is held at the KLIA quarantine station for not less than seven days. The vaccination record does not change that. Seven days is a minimum, and the department can extend detention on a risk assessment.

Can I avoid the 28-day American quarantine for a dog leaving Malaysia?

Yes, with a passing rabies serology titre from a CDC-approved laboratory. The sample must be drawn at least 30 days after the dog's first valid rabies vaccination and at least 28 days before entry. The dog still visits a registered facility for an exam and revaccination, but is released the same visit.

Which American airports can my dog fly into from Malaysia?

Six: Atlanta, Los Angeles, Miami, New York JFK, Philadelphia and Washington Dulles. Each hosts a CDC-registered animal care facility, and the dog must arrive where its reservation was made. Onward domestic flights are barred until the facility services are complete.

Do cats need the American import form and facility booking?

No. The rule requiring the form, the facility reservation and the titre applies to dogs. Cats must still appear healthy on arrival and can be refused entry if they show evidence of a zoonotic disease, and the destination state may add conditions. Hawaii's quarantine applies to cats as it does to dogs.

Can I file the Malaysian import permit myself?

No. The MAQIS import permit can only be lodged by an authorised agent, which is where most owner-managed moves stall. Everything else on a USA to Malaysia pet shipping job can be arranged from the American side, but the permit comes through an agent in Malaysia.

Moving between Malaysia and the United States with a pet?

Send your direction of travel, your pet's breed and its vaccination record. We will confirm eligibility at both ends, map the titre and permit dates, and return a written quote.
