Cost to Bring a Dog From the UK to Malaysia

The cost to bring a dog from the UK to Malaysia usually lands between RM 8,500 and RM 24,000, with most medium dogs around RM 11,000 to RM 17,500. Crate volume sets the freight. Quarantine days set the rest, and the UK’s scheduled-country status is the one thing that can take that line to zero.

Introduction: the UK number, and the two things that move it

Quick answer

Most UK to Malaysia dog moves cost between RM 8,500 and RM 24,000 all-in. The spread is not airline pricing. It comes from two variables an owner can settle early: the size of the crate the dog needs, and how many quarantine days MAQIS confirms for the arrival date.

Owners in London, Manchester or Edinburgh usually start with a fare comparison. That is the wrong end of the file. Freight is priced on crate volume, not the dog’s weight, so a Labrador and a Beagle are not in the same league.

Quarantine is the second variable, and the UK is unusual there. It sits on Malaysia’s scheduled countries list, the strongest cost position any origin can have — but only if the file still qualifies on the day the certificate is signed. This guide prices a UK move the way we run one at My Pet Mover under our Malaysia–UK pet transport service. Before the numbers, it helps to see where a UK pet actually spends its last hours.

What does it cost to bring a dog from the UK to Malaysia?

Quick answer

Budget RM 8,500 to RM 13,000 for a small dog, RM 11,000 to RM 17,500 for a medium one, and RM 15,000 to RM 24,000 for a large breed. Giant dogs sit above that again. The band widens with size because freight is billed on the crate, not the animal.

Quotes differ wildly between agents because they include different things. Read any UK quote against four questions: does it cover the crate, the Official Veterinarian visit, ground transport to the airport, and quarantine board if imposed? Our breakdown of what it costs to fly a dog overseas covers the same lines for other origins.

Is the UK still a scheduled country for Malaysia?

Quick answer

Yes. The Department of Veterinary Services notice dated 11 December 2025 names the United Kingdom, Eire and Northern Ireland at the head of its twenty-two scheduled countries. That places a UK dog on the scheduled regulation, which is the cheaper of Malaysia’s two rulebooks.

Malaysia runs two regulations for dogs and cats, and the gap between them is worth thousands of ringgit. The scheduled-country regulation has no quarantine clause. The non-scheduled version does, and the same PDF carries the December 2025 notice. We unpack the split in our guide to scheduled versus non-scheduled countries.

Here is the clause almost nobody reads. The scheduled regulation asks the exporting government to certify that the animal had not been imported into the country during the six months preceding the date of the certificate. A dog that moved to Britain from Dubai eight months ago is fine. One that arrived five months ago is not, and that line pushes a straightforward file onto the non-scheduled track.

  • Check the arrival date, not the passport. A UK pet passport says nothing about when the dog entered Britain.
  • Six months runs back from certificate signing, not the flight date, so a delayed departure can fix a borderline case.
  • Imported rescues are the usual casualty. Overseas street rescues are common in UK homes and often arrived recently.

What quarantine could add to a UK bill

Quick answer

Official sources disagree, so we will not pretend otherwise. The scheduled regulation covering the UK carries no quarantine clause. The non-scheduled one states not less than seven days. Several pet-travel publishers describe a protocol dated 28 December 2024 applying at least fourteen days across the board.

That disagreement is the largest single uncertainty in a UK quote. On a clean scheduled file the board line can be zero. On a fourteen-day stay it becomes a four-figure item. Both readings sit in our piece on whether Malaysia quarantines pets for seven days or fourteen.

Our answer is to put the arrival date to MAQIS in writing before anyone books a vet or a flight. If a stay is imposed, it happens at the airport station described in our walkthrough of a KLAQS quarantine stay, at the rates in what pet quarantine in Malaysia costs.

Any agent who quotes a firm quarantine figure for a UK arrival without a written MAQIS answer is guessing with your money.

Where the money actually goes on a UK move

Quick answer

Air freight from London is the largest line on every UK file, and agent handling at both ends is second. Government fees are almost invisible. That surprises owners who assumed the permit was the expensive part, when it is closer to a rounding error.

The shape below is a UK file with the labels stripped off. It is close to a move from the USA to Malaysia, except the UK sheds most of the quarantine weight when scheduled status holds.

Crate size is the cost lever you still control

Quick answer

Airlines bill live animals on volumetric weight, calculated from the crate’s outside dimensions rather than the dog. Moving one crate series up roughly halves your freight again, which is why measuring the dog properly is worth more than any fare comparison.

The crate must let the dog stand, turn and lie down naturally. That is a welfare rule, not a negotiable one. Heathrow’s reception centre publishes its own container requirements, built on the IATA Live Animals Regulations. Measure to the shoulder, never the head, as our guide to IATA crate sizing for dogs explains.

How Crate Series Changes What the Airline Bills

Common IATA crate series with approximate external dimensions, the volumetric weight each produces under the standard air cargo divisor, typical UK breeds for each series, and the resulting freight index with the series 400 crate set at one hundred.
Crate series External size, cm Typical UK breeds Volumetric kg Freight index
Series 300 81 × 57 × 61 Beagle, Cocker Spaniel 47 72
Series 400 92 × 64 × 66 Border Collie, Springer Spaniel 65 100
Series 500 107 × 71 × 76 Labrador, Golden Retriever 96 148
Series 700 122 × 81 × 89 Great Dane, Irish Wolfhound 147 226

Source: My Pet Mover calculation from common IATA crate dimensions using the standard air cargo volumetric divisor. Index sets series 400 at 100.

A dog two centimetres too tall for a series 400 does not cost a little more. It costs about half as much again. Snub-nosed breeds add a second layer, since many carriers refuse them — see airline restrictions on snub-nosed breeds.

The UK paperwork: APHA certificate 3914

Quick answer

Malaysia-bound dogs leave the UK on export health certificate 3914, applied for online and signed by a Defra-approved Official Veterinarian. Your usual practice vet cannot sign it unless they hold OV status, and that is where most UK cost surprises come from.

The Animal and Plant Health Agency publishes it as certificate 3914 for cats and dogs to Malaysia. England, Scotland and Wales apply through the online service; Northern Ireland now goes through DAERA after a change published on 6 May 2026. Our guide to export health certificates for UK pets walks through the form.

Three things drive the UK vet bill:

  1. Finding an Official Veterinarian. Not every practice has one, so rural owners often travel or pay a call-out.
  2. The seven-day examination window. Malaysia wants the health check inside seven days of export, forcing a second appointment close to the flight.
  3. Microchip and rabies sequence. The chip must be read and recorded before the rabies dose, or the vaccination is repeated. See microchip rules for pets entering Malaysia and rabies vaccination rules.

UK certificates also carry declarations that catch owners off guard, such as the one covered in why UK pet exports ask about pig contact.

What MAQIS charges on the Malaysian side

Quick answer

Malaysian government fees are token amounts next to the freight. The import permit, the quarantine certificate and the inspection charges together sit in the low tens of ringgit. What they cost you is time, because the permit has a short validity and cannot be filed by an owner.

The Malaysian Quarantine and Inspection Services Department issues permits through its permit application system, and the regulation requires the consignment to arrive carrying a valid one. Owner applications are not accepted, as our explainer on why you cannot DIY a MAQIS permit sets out. Fees are listed in MAQIS fees and import permit costs.

Sequencing matters more than the money. A permit filed too early expires before the flight; filed too late, it holds the dog at KLIA. We run the same sequence on every origin, including the one in how to apply for a MAQIS import permit from Japan.

When the money actually leaves your account

Quick answer

A UK move is not one payment. Roughly two-thirds of the total falls in the final five weeks, and more than half of that in the last three days. Owners who budget for a single invoice get caught by the pace, not by the size.

Spreading the spend is the practical reason to start early. It also buys room to fix a failed measurement or a rescheduled OV visit before either costs money. Our document checklist for pets entering Malaysia tracks the same sequence.

When Spend Falls Across a UK to Malaysia Move

Stages of a United Kingdom to Malaysia dog relocation ordered by time before the flight, showing the approximate share of total spend that falls at each stage and who invoices it.
Time before flight Stage Who invoices Share of spend
12–16 weeks Microchip check, rabies and core vaccines Private vet 3%
8–10 weeks Crate purchase and crate training Crate supplier 12%
6–8 weeks Permit groundwork and breed approval MAQIS and agent 4%
4–5 weeks Cargo booking deposit Airline or agent 25%
7–10 days Certificate 3914 and OV examination Official Veterinarian 14%
0–3 days Freight balance and ground transport Airline and agent 30%

The breed problem hiding in British homes

Quick answer

Malaysia bans the Staffordshire Bull Terrier under its pit bull grouping, which matters because it is one of Britain’s most common family dogs. Restricted breeds such as the German Shepherd and Rottweiler are allowed, but need written approval and a home inspection first.

The banned list also names the Akita, American Bulldog, Dogo Argentino, Fila Braziliero, Japanese Tosa and Neapolitan Mastiff, with full detail in our page on banned dog breeds in Malaysia. For a banned breed there is no permit and no appeal.

Restricted breeds are different. They are importable, but written approval must come before the permit application, the dog must be at least three months old, and the intended home is inspected for kennel, compound and control arrangements. Budget two extra months for that.

Malaysia reads the breed as written on the pedigree or vet record, so a crossbreed logged as “Staffie cross” on a UK microchip database is a problem waiting to happen. Check the connecting hub too, since transit countries run their own breed lists.

Conclusion: how to read a UK quote

Quick answer

A UK quote is only comparable if it names the crate series, states the quarantine assumption, and separates the Official Veterinarian visit from the agent fee. Anything presented as one flat number is hiding the two lines that actually decide the total.

Ask three questions of any quote. Which crate series is it priced on? What quarantine outcome does it assume, and is that in writing from MAQIS? Is the OV visit inside or outside the fee? Our pet relocation pricing is laid out the same way, so the lines match.

Heathrow’s Animal Reception Centre, the airport’s live animal border post since 1977, handles about 22,000 dogs and cats imported through Heathrow each year. Volume is not the constraint. Your own file is.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to bring a dog from the UK to Malaysia?

Most UK moves land between RM 8,500 and RM 24,000 all-in, with medium dogs typically RM 11,000 to RM 17,500. Air freight is the largest line and is billed on the crate’s volume, so the dog’s measured standing height moves the total more than anything else.

Is the UK a scheduled country for pet imports to Malaysia?

Yes. The Department of Veterinary Services notice dated 11 December 2025 lists the United Kingdom, Eire and Northern Ireland among twenty-two scheduled countries. The scheduled regulation also requires that the dog was not itself imported into the UK within the six months before the certificate is signed.

Will my dog be quarantined in Malaysia arriving from the UK?

Sources disagree, so ask MAQIS in writing. The scheduled regulation that covers the UK has no quarantine clause, while a protocol reported from late December 2024 is described as applying at least fourteen days. We confirm the days for your arrival date before quoting.

Can my own vet sign the Malaysian export certificate in the UK?

Only if they are a Defra-approved Official Veterinarian. Certificate 3914 is applied for through the APHA online service and must be signed by an OV, then handled according to APHA instructions. Many practices do not hold OV status, so confirm this early.

Can I bring a Staffordshire Bull Terrier from the UK to Malaysia?

No. Malaysia’s regulation places the Staffordshire Bull Terrier inside its banned pit bull grouping, alongside the American Pit Bull Terrier and American Staffordshire Terrier. There is no permit route for a banned breed, regardless of temperament or UK legal status.
