Air cargo pet rates are quoted per kilo, but the kilos are not your pet's kilos. Airlines charge the greater of actual weight and volumetric weight, so the crate usually sets the bill. Rates from Kuala Lumpur run roughly RM 18 to RM 55 per chargeable kilo depending on region, plus surcharges and a minimum charge.
Introduction: the per-kilo number is the smallest part of the story
Owners ring around for the cheapest per-kilo rate, then get an invoice two or three times what they expected. The rate was honest. The number of kilos it was multiplied by was not, because cargo weighs the box as well as the animal.
Ask three agents for a rate from Kuala Lumpur to London and you may hear RM 32, RM 38 and RM 41 per kilo. The cheapest can still produce the most expensive invoice. That is not a trick. It is simply how air freight has been priced for decades.
This page walks the pricing in the order the airline builds it. What a chargeable kilo is, where the weight breaks sit, what stacks on top, and what the per-kilo bands out of KLIA look like. Our pet relocation cost breakdown puts those figures beside every other line, and My Pet Mover can price a route in one call.
Before the numbers, a short look at the costs that tend to arrive late in a pet move.
What are air cargo pet rates, and what is a chargeable kilo?
Air cargo pet rates are per-kilo prices applied to chargeable weight, the higher of the shipment’s actual and volumetric weight. Volumetric weight is length times width times height in centimetres divided by 6,000. Pet and crate travel as one consignment.
Aircraft run out of space long before they run out of lifting power, so carriers price on whichever is greater: what a shipment weighs, or what it occupies. Maersk sets out the same principle in its guide to air cargo chargeable weight, and the 6,000 divisor is the industry standard.
Three figures appear on every pet air waybill, and mixing them up breaks most budgets:
- Actual weight. Pet, crate, bowls, bedding and bolts, on the scale together at acceptance.
- Volumetric weight. The crate’s outside dimensions multiplied and divided by 6,000. Nothing to do with the animal.
- Chargeable weight. Whichever is larger. The only one the rate is applied to.
For almost every dog and cat leaving Malaysia, volumetric weight wins. A crate is a mostly empty box by design, because the pet must stand, turn and lie down naturally. That rule sits in the IATA Live Animals Regulations. Live animals are also rated above general cargo, which is why a pet export booking from Malaysia never prices like an ordinary freight consignment.

How much does the crate add to the chargeable weight?
A 5 kg cat in a size 100 crate is charged around 13 kg. A 30 kg labrador in a size 500 crate is charged around 103 kg. Across the common sizes, chargeable weight lands at roughly two to three times the pet’s own weight once the box is measured.
The table below runs the arithmetic across the sizes Malaysian owners actually buy, using the ladder in our guide to IATA approved pet crate sizes and prices.
Pet Weight Versus Chargeable Weight by Crate Size
| Crate size | Typical pet | Actual weight (kg) | Volumetric weight (kg) | Chargeable weight (kg) | Multiple |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 100 / XS | Cat, 4 kg | 7 | 13 | 13 | 3.3× |
| 200 / S | Shih tzu, 8 kg | 13 | 27 | 27 | 3.4× |
| 300 / M | Beagle, 14 kg | 22 | 46 | 46 | 3.3× |
| 400 / L | Border collie, 22 kg | 34 | 75 | 75 | 3.4× |
| 500 / XL | Labrador, 30 kg | 45 | 103 | 103 | 3.4× |
| 700 / giant | Great dane, 55 kg | 85 | 173 | 173 | 3.1× |

Two things jump out. The multiple is stable, between three and three and a half at every size. And volumetric weight wins every row, including the giant sizes where the crate is genuinely heavy.
Multiply your pet’s weight by three and a quarter. That is roughly what the airline will bill you for.
So one crate size up is not a RM 300 decision about a plastic box. On the 400 to 500 step it adds around 28 chargeable kilos, which on a long-haul rate runs into thousands of ringgit.
Why can a heavier shipment cost less? Weight breaks explained
Air cargo rates step down at published weight breaks, commonly 45 kg, 100 kg and 300 kg. Because the lower rate applies to the whole shipment, declaring up to the next break can cost less than the true weight. Airlines call this the lower charge in a higher weight.
A rate sheet does not give one price per kilo. It gives a minimum charge, a normal rate under the first break, then cheaper rates as the shipment gets heavier. Korean Air publishes an example on its air cargo tariff page. The model below shows where the crossover points fall.

Bars scaled to the highest rate. Modelled scenario using representative break rates on a Kuala Lumpur medium-haul route. Bold figures show the cheaper way to charge the same shipment.
Read the two bold cells. At a true 44 chargeable kilos you pay RM 1,232 at the under-45 rate, or RM 1,013 declared at 45 kg. At 99 kilos the same move saves over RM 300. Nothing is hidden from the airline; the arithmetic is theirs. Where it matters:
- Single medium dog, 40 to 44 chargeable kilos. Almost always cheaper at the 45 kg break. A good agent applies this unasked.
- Two pets on one air waybill. Combining often clears the next break, which is why moving two pets to Australia rarely costs double.
- Cats and toy breeds. Usually land under the minimum charge, where the per-kilo rate stops mattering at all.
What sits on top of the per-kilo freight line?
The freight line is usually 55 to 70 per cent of the cargo invoice. Fuel and security surcharges, the air waybill fee, terminal handling, live animal handling and export documentation make up the rest, and several of those are flat fees rather than per-kilo charges.
Surcharges are where two honest quotes drift apart. One agent shows an all-in figure; the other shows a low freight rate and lets the extras land later. Here is a medium-haul KLIA invoice with every line on the page.

Modelled from My Pet Mover cargo invoices, medium-haul Asian routes, Kuala Lumpur, 2024 to 2026. Excludes vet, permit, quarantine and ground transport.
Flat fees are why small pets look expensive per kilo. A cat carries the same air waybill fee and documentation charge as a labrador, spread over an eighth of the weight. Cargo is also only one column of the move: vet work, permits, the crate and quarantine sit outside this invoice, and our note on hidden costs in pet relocation quotes covers those.

What do per-kilo pet rates from KLIA cost by region?
All-in per-kilo pet rates from Kuala Lumpur run around RM 18 to RM 26 within Southeast Asia, RM 24 to RM 34 to North Asia and the Gulf, RM 34 to RM 46 to Europe and Australia, and RM 40 to RM 55 to North and South America.
Distance matters less than you would expect. What moves the number is how much belly capacity flies the route daily, and whether either end has an animal handling facility.

The Southeast Asia band looks generous until you remember the minimum charge. On a two-hour hop a cat rarely earns enough freight to clear it, so the effective rate runs well above the band.
Europe and Australia sit close together despite different flight times, because Australian routes have quarantine-driven scheduling and fewer pet-capable services weekly. Which airline you can book matters as much as geography, so start with our list of airlines carrying pets to and from Malaysia.
Why does the same route quote differently month to month?
Pet rates ride on general cargo capacity, which tightens in the fourth quarter and around long holidays. A quote given in March for an October flight is an estimate, not a price. Most agents hold a rate only once the booking is confirmed.
Most advice online treats pet freight as a fixed price list. It is closer to a hotel room: the same crate on the same route can vary by a fifth depending on when it flies.
- Peak season capacity. September to December is retail freight season. Hold space is scarce and rates firm across every category.
- Fuel surcharge movement. Applied per kilo, so it scales with your crate rather than sitting as a flat line.
- Heat and breed embargoes. When carriers restrict loading, the remaining services price accordingly. Our note on airline heat embargoes explains those windows.
- Day of week. Midweek departures from KLIA are easier to secure than Friday and Sunday services.
The answer is not to chase the cheapest month. Lock the route early and accept that the rate confirms at booking. Owners who shift a departure to catch a quiet window often lose more in repeat vet visits and re-dated documents than the freight saved.
How do you lower the bill without cutting corners?
The three levers that move a pet freight bill are crate size, weight breaks and route structure. An undersized crate is not a saving, because a crate refused at acceptance costs a rebooking and a second set of handling fees.
In the order they pay off:
- Measure the pet before buying anything. The correct crate is often one size smaller than the shop suggests, and one size is tens of chargeable kilos.
- Ask the agent to price both weight breaks. Within about 10 per cent of a break, the higher declaration is usually cheaper.
- Combine pets onto one air waybill where the route allows. Flat fees are shared and the combined weight often clears a better band.
- Prefer single-hub routing over the cheapest fare. Every transit adds a handling fee, a temperature risk and a missed-connection chance.
- Get the documents right first time. A paperwork failure costs the whole freight line again; our page on pet health certificate costs covers the vet work.
Two things rarely work. Under-declaring dimensions fails at acceptance, where the crate is measured and reweighed. And cabin or excess baggage only dodges cargo rates on the few routes that permit it, as our comparison of cabin, cargo and excess baggage sets out.
Conclusion: read the weight, not just the rate
Air cargo pet rates are simple once you accept that the airline is selling space, not lifting an animal. Chargeable weight, the weight break above it and the flat fees around it explain nearly every difference between two quotes.
Take one habit from this page: whenever anyone gives you a per-kilo rate, ask for the chargeable weight in the same sentence. Two numbers make a quote. One number makes a conversation.

Frequently Asked Questions
1. How are air cargo pet rates calculated?
A per-kilo rate is applied to chargeable weight, the greater of actual weight and volumetric weight. Volumetric weight is the crate’s length times width times height in centimetres divided by 6,000. Fuel, security, handling, documentation and the air waybill fee are added on top, and a minimum charge applies if freight falls below it.
2. How much is the per-kilo rate for a pet from Malaysia?
Around RM 18 to RM 26 per chargeable kilo within Southeast Asia, RM 24 to RM 34 to North Asia and the Gulf, RM 34 to RM 46 to Europe and Australia, and RM 40 to RM 55 to the Americas. Bands move with fuel, season and route capacity.
3. Why did my quote come in higher than the rate I was given?
Usually because the rate covered freight only. Fuel and security surcharges scale per kilo, while the air waybill fee, live animal handling and documentation are flat. Together those lines make up roughly 43 to 51 per cent of a pet cargo invoice, most on small pets.
4. Can declaring a higher weight really cost less?
Yes. Rates step down at published weight breaks such as 45 kg and 100 kg, and the lower rate applies to the whole shipment. A 44 kg consignment rated at the 45 kg break can save a few hundred ringgit. Airlines call this the lower charge in a higher weight.
5. Is there a minimum charge for a small cat?
Yes, and small pets often fall under it. When calculated freight is below the route’s published minimum, the minimum applies instead, so a light cat can pay the same freight as a heavier one. On short regional routes this is the norm.
